Overview

The Uttarakhand Char Dham Yatra is one of the most revered and spiritually significant pilgrimage circuits in India. It involves visiting four sacred Hindu temples located in the state of Uttarakhand. These four temples, collectively known as the Char Dham, are dedicated to different deities and hold immense religious importance for Hindus. The Char Dham Yatra is believed to cleanse one's soul, wash away sins, and lead to salvation.

The four temples included in the Uttarakhand Char Dham Yatra are:

  1. Yamunotri: The first stop of the Char Dham Yatra is Yamunotri, located in the Uttarkashi district. It is dedicated to the Goddess Yamuna, and the temple is situated at an altitude of about 3,291 meters (10,797 feet) above sea level. The Yamuna River originates from the Champasar Glacier near the temple.

  2. Gangotri: The second destination is Gangotri, situated in the Uttarkashi district. It is dedicated to Goddess Ganga, and the temple is located at an altitude of around 3,100 meters (10,200 feet) above sea level. The Bhagirathi River, which later becomes the Ganges, originates from the Gangotri Glacier nearby.

  3. Kedarnath: The third stop is Kedarnath, located in the Rudraprayag district. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. As mentioned earlier, the temple is situated at an elevation of approximately 3,583 meters (11,755 feet) above sea level, and pilgrims have to undertake a challenging trek to reach the temple.

  4. Badrinath: The final destination of the Char Dham Yatra is Badrinath, located in the Chamoli district. It is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is one of the holiest temples in Hinduism. The temple is situated at an altitude of about 3,133 meters (10,279 feet) above sea level, along the banks of the Alaknanda River.

The Char Dham Yatra is traditionally undertaken from late April to early November when the temples are open for pilgrims. During the winter months, the region experiences heavy snowfall, and the temples remain closed, making them inaccessible.

Pilgrims often start the journey from the town of Haridwar or Rishikesh and proceed to each temple in a clockwise direction, following the age-old tradition. The yatra takes visitors through awe-inspiring landscapes, lush valleys, and picturesque mountains, offering not just a religious experience but also an opportunity to connect with nature and experience the divinity of these sacred sites.

The Uttarakhand Char Dham Yatra is a sacred and spiritually rewarding journey for millions of devotees who undertake it to seek blessings, cleanse their souls, and attain spiritual liberation. It is a celebration of faith, devotion, and the rich cultural heritage of India.
